As much as it pains us to say, there are some situations where twitter isn’t quite all it’s cracked up to be. Don’t get us wrong: it’s definitely a lot of fun, and certainly an emerging marketing medium that’s only going to become more important in the future.

But at the same time, unless you’re a celebrity or someone with a massively-high number of existing contacts, the return you’re going to get from a twitter marketing effort is going to be minimal at first. But that doesn’t mean you can afford to ignore it. Here are three things you absolutely must start doing on twitter today, if you aren’t already:

Start a profile.
Like we said, twitter is obviously going to be an important medium in the future. If you’re going to get comfortable with it, much less take advantage of its growing prominence, you’re going to have to launch a profile and start making connections.

Follow your most important clients (and maybe your competitors).
There is a surprising amount of information being shared via tweets, especially from big companies and prominent personalities. Make sure you’re tuning in to the latest news with your clients, colleagues, and maybe even your competitors, by following them on twitter.

Search Twitter every day or two for mentions of your company.
How would you rather find out about complaints, false information, reviews, and other news about your company – on Twitter before many people see them, or later when they start showing up on search engine results? Since more and more people are beginning and continuing professional conversations on twitter, it only makes sense to keep an ear to the ground and find out what they are saying about you.
